Systems Engineering & Integration Terminology
The INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook, 4th Edition, references ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 for definitions and discussions related to technical and supporting processes that a systems engineer utilizes. The categories we use for our posts are consistent with INCOSE. The key technical processes are:
- Business or mission analysis process
- Stakeholder needs and requirements definition process
- System requirements definition process
- Architecture definition process
- Design definition process
- System analysis process
- Implementation process
- Integration process
- Verification process
- Transition process
- Validation process
- Operation process
- Maintenance process
- Disposal process
Project Management Terminology
In addition to INCOSE, we’ve adopted definitions and discussions related to project management as defined by the Project Management Institute (PMI), specifically their publication A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide) 5th Edition and utilize some of their terminology for our tags. We stay consistent with PMI’s Project Management Process Groups, which are:
- Initiating (initiate)
- Planning (plan)
- Executing (execute)
- Monitoring and controlling (monitor, control)
- Closing (close)
